Cat Power was the Chan Marshall's sobriquet. Cat Power is a Southern-bred singer and songwriter, the daughter of itinerant pianist Charlie. After dropping out of high school, Marshall moved to try her luck in New York. Performing under the name of Cat Power, she was registered as the opening act for Liz Phair, where she met Sonic Youth's drummer Steve Shelley and Two Dollar Guitar's Tim Foljahn, who assented to become her backing band.
