In Steve Earle's first music career, namely before his prison sentence for drug use and firearms, the country singer was constrained by the drugs and the Nashville industry. When released from prison in 1994, Steve Earle formed his own recording company and was drugs-free, able to write more diverse music, with bluegrass and hard rock influences among others.
