Three Top 20 albums behind them and a cult following developing, the Manic Street Preachers suffered a blow when Richey James mysteriously disappeared, leaving the Manics as a trio, moving towards a more Brit-pop sound but continuing with their stark and arty subject matters, much due to the songs using James' lyrics.
