Erykah Badu grew up listening to soul and hip-hop from the 70s and 80s. Launching her career with Baduizm in 1997 Erykah Badu would join the masters. Baduizm drew comparisons with Billie Holiday. Furthermore, it separated Erykah Badu from any other R&B singer with her own unique delicate voice, not the sweet sounding popular vocals that were found on the charts at the time.
