To describe the effect the Duke Ellington has had on the world of music, jazz and American culture at large, one can look at the tributes he received after his death in 1974. Dave Brubeck dedicated The Duke in 1954 to Duke Ellington, the song becoming a jazz standard. Miles Davis, who recorded the Duke in 1957, has, a month after Ellington's death, created a 30 minute piece He Loved Him Madly in honor of the master.
