Bessie Smith, the greatest blues singer of all time, began a decline in her career in 1929, since blues were simply out of fashion. Despite being at the peak of her singing, and only 35, she was dropped from Columbia Records in 1931. Despute this, Bessie Smith went on working, appearing the film, St. Louis Blues that year, a low-budget movie short that contains the only footage of her.
