About Bessie Smith
Despite being at the low point if career in the 1930s, Bessie Smith went on working and singing. She played the Apollo in 1935 and substituted for Billie Holiday in the show Stars Over Broadway. Her hit 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out' presaged her leaner years.
